We used γ emitting isotopes to study intestinal uptake of Ag+, Ca++, Cd++, Fe++, Zn++,Mn++, Ni++, Hg++ and CH3Hg+, SeO3-- and seleno-methionine. Intestinal uptake, retention and compartment kinetics varied extensively between different metals and different forms of the same metal. Large differences were observed between the intestinal sites for extensive uptake of metals. Quantity and quality of dietary components as lipids, proteins and fibers affected net intestinal uptake, crude diets suppressing uptake. Several chelating agents affected metal biokinetics: Hydrophilic chelators decreased intestinal uptake and increased excretion, lipophilic chelators increased uptake and increased deposition in lipid rich organs normally not being important deposits for these metals. Selenomethionine affected the kinetics, organ disposition and transplacental transport of mercury. Poor essential trace element status and toxic metal exposures are common in developing countries. Our studies offer possibilities for understanding interactions between dietary, environmental and occupational metal exposures to be applied in risk reduction strategies.
Your abstract is ready for submission. Please click the "Submit" button above. When your abstract is submitted successfully, you will see a message at the top of the form (right above the first question of the form: "Abstract fee payment identification code"). If there is any error, tips for correction are also listed there.
